Why people stay in Marlow
Marlow is a half-hour drive north of Reading and it's the polished Thames-town where England's food money congregates. Tom Kerridge runs three restaurants here (the Hand & Flowers, the Coach, the Butcher's Tap) and the Compleat Angler by the river turns 18th-century posting-house into full-tilt destination hotel. The centrepiece is Marlow Bridge — William Tierney Clark's 1832 suspension bridge, model for his larger Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest — with All Saints Church behind. At 9pm the High Street terraces are still busy in summer and the pubs run until 11.
Stay in Marlow for Michelin-tier food, Thames-side polish, and easy Henley/Reading access. It is the most expensive stay in this list and doesn’t apologise for it. Don’t stay here for cheap travel or urban energy. What's overrated: the boat trips from Marlow that stop and turn — for a proper Thames experience take the towpath to Hurley (4 km) instead. What's underrated: Marlow's Wednesday morning market on Higginson Park — small but properly local, cheeses, bread, veg, all with the river as backdrop.
The Compleat Angler on Marlow Bridge ($240-$420) is the flagship — riverside, historic, expensive. Danesfield House Hotel & Spa (3 miles north-east, $220-$380) is the country-mansion option. The Crown at Bray-style Marlow ($180-$260) is smaller and centre-of-town. Premier Inn Marlow on Little Marlow Road ($120-$160) exists and is the only remotely budget option — book it 3 months out for weekends. Under $120 doesn’t really happen in Marlow.

Getting around Marlow
Marlow has its own small branch line — take the Elizabeth Line to Maidenhead, change to the Marlow Donkey shuttle (10 minutes, hourly). Total from Reading: 40 minutes with a change at Maidenhead, $12. From Heathrow, easiest is bus 703 to Slough then train changes. By car, 30 minutes from Reading via A4 and A404. Inside Marlow the town is fully walkable — nothing is more than 15 minutes from the bridge.
Questions about Marlow
Almost never for dinner. Occasionally at lunch on weekdays if you arrive when they open. Best strategy: book online 8-10 weeks ahead, or walk into the Butcher's Tap (Kerridge's cheaper pub next door) for the same team's food without the wait.
Different — Henley is bigger, more shops, more history (the regatta, the rowing museum). Marlow is smaller, foodier, more polished. Marlow wins for restaurants; Henley wins for a longer visit with more to do. Both cost roughly the same at the top end.
