Getting there
Take the GWR shuttle from Reading to Henley-on-Thames, changing at Twyford — about 25 minutes total, $9 off-peak return. Trains run hourly, more during the Royal Regatta in early July. The station is a 2-minute walk from Henley Bridge and the town centre. If you’re feeling ambitious, cycle the 8 miles along the Thames Path from Caversham to Henley — flat and mostly traffic-free.
What to do
The River & Rowing Museum is the town's cultural anchor — around $16, small but excellent, with a permanent Wind in the Willows exhibit for families. Walk across Henley Bridge for the view Turner painted, then along the towpath towards Marsh Lock (30 minutes each way). Hobbs of Henley runs 40-minute river cruises for $14, and hires self-drive electric boats for $80 for two hours.
Eating and drinking
The Angel on the Bridge is the postcard pub — pints on a terrace directly over the Thames, mains around $22. The Three Tuns on Market Place is the locals' choice, cheaper and less crowded. For coffee and cake, Chococo on Thameside makes its own chocolate. Time your visit around the Henley Royal Regatta (first week of July) only if you have tickets or don’t mind extreme crowds — the Enclosures charge and the town gets rammed.
