Malmaison Reading is the pick — the historic Great Western Hotel building at the station, rooms from $180 midweek and $260 on Friday. Roseate Reading on Kennetside is the alternative, a boutique 5-star over the river at around $240 with the best breakfast in town included. Both put you within 10 minutes of everything and offer late checkout for guests who ask nicely.
Day one: culture and a proper dinner
Start at the Museum of English Rural Life (free, but donate $8), then a private guided tour of Reading Abbey Ruins — book through Reading Museum for $15pp. Lunch at Cerise inside the Forbury Hotel, around $45 for two courses.
