Why people stay in Henley-on-Thames
Henley-on-Thames is 30 minutes north of Reading by car (or 30 minutes by train changing at Twyford), and it's the proper set-piece Thames town. The 18th-century five-arch bridge, St Mary's church tower rising behind it, and the mile-straight racing stretch north of the bridge form the postcard. In the first week of July the Royal Regatta takes over the town — book anything from January. The rest of the year Henley is a moneyed but relaxed place, with Hart Street and Market Place full of independent boutiques, delis, and restaurants. At 9pm the riverside terraces at the Angel and the Chocolate Café are still busy in summer.
Stay in Henley for the Thames-town experience at its most expensive. Everything costs $30-$50 more than Reading equivalents, and worth it if this is what you came for. Don’t stay here as a Reading business base — the trains are slow and the taxis expensive. What's overrated: the regatta itself unless you have a Stewards' Enclosure badge — from outside the enclosures you see about 5% of the racing and pay $10 for a beer. What's underrated: the walk south along the towpath to Shiplake, 5 km of near-empty river with lovely lock at Marsh.
Hotel du Vin at the old brewery on New Street ($180-$280) is the character pick, right in town. The Relais Henley on Hart Street ($195-$300) is old-school. Phyllis Court Club on Marlow Road offers rooms if you know a member ($150-$200). Premier Inn Henley on Reading Road ($105-$140) is the budget-friendly outlier, 15 minutes' walk from the bridge. Regatta week (first week of July) triples all prices — book by January or forget it.

Getting around Henley-on-Thames
Henley Station is a branch line off the main GWR — take a Reading train to Twyford (5 minutes), change to the Henley shuttle (10 minutes). Total 30 minutes from Reading, $10. To London Paddington, allow 60 minutes via Twyford. From Heathrow, RailAir to Reading then two trains. By car, 30 minutes from Reading via A4155. During Regatta week, drive early and park at Mill Meadows or use the park-and-ride from Reading.

First full week of July annually. Turning up is fine for the towpath and the general enclosure ($30 on the gate), but the Stewards' Enclosure requires member introduction and strict dress code — jacket and tie for men, dress or skirt below the knee for women. Book hotels by January.
Not really — it's 15 km along the Thames Path, doable in a long day (5-6 hours) but you’ll want to train back. If you want a Thames walk from Reading, Caversham to Sonning (6 km) is a much better half-day.
