The town centre is walkable in 20 minutes end to end. For everywhere else, Reading Buses is faster than you’d think.

On foot
Reading Town Centre is genuinely walkable — station to the Oracle in 8 minutes, Abbey Quarter to Caversham Bridge in 15. All the hotels in this guide, the major restaurants, and Reading Museum sit inside a 1-mile radius. The Thames Path towards Sonning and the Kennet Path towards Aldermaston are both signposted from the centre and start about 10 minutes' walk from Friar Street.
Reading Buses
Reading Buses (the purple ones) run frequent routes to Caversham, Green Park, Winnersh, Woodley, and the University. Single fare $3, day ticket $6 contactless, family day $12. Download the Reading Buses app for live times. The 21 goes to Green Park, the 17 to Tilehurst, the 19 to the hospital. Route 33 is the direct Reading-to-Wokingham. Avoid the M25 direction on Friday afternoons — every bus runs late.
Trains, taxis, and bikes
Reading station is a major national hub — GWR to London Paddington, Oxford, Bristol, Bath, and the South West; SWR to Waterloo via Reading West; CrossCountry to Birmingham and the North. The Elizabeth Line terminates here. For short hops, Uber and Bolt work well ($8-15 across town). Reading has no public bike hire, but Adventure Dolphin near the Oracle rents bikes for around $25 a day. Parking in the centre runs $4-5 an hour.
