Why people stay in Woodley
Woodley is its own town in name — technically not part of Reading — but functionally it's an eastern suburb. The centre is a 1960s pedestrian precinct around Crockhamwell Road, with a clocktower, a Waitrose, and the sort of independent shops (a butcher, a florist, an actual key-cutter) that vanished from most English suburbs. At 9pm on a weekday it's dead. Woodley's small claim to fame is aviation: the Miles Aircraft factory operated here until 1948, and the Museum of Berkshire Aviation on Mohawk Way is a proper enthusiast's stop.
Stay in Woodley if you’re working near Winnersh Triangle or Green Park, you have a car, and you’re happy driving 10 minutes for restaurants. Don’t stay here if you’re relying on public transport for evenings — the last bus back from Reading is around 11:30pm and Ubers surge on weekends. What's overrated: 'Woodley village' — the precinct is fine but it's not charming. What's underrated: the Lakes off Loddon Bridge Road, five interconnected former gravel pits with a great flat walking loop.
The Aurora on Reading Road ($85-$115) is the main option, a business-focused hotel with car parking. Premier Inn Reading East on Rose Kiln Lane is technically closer to the M4 slip road at Junction 10 and runs $80-$100. For character there's nothing here — this is a functional-stay area. If character matters more than convenience, base yourself in central Reading or Sonning and rent a car.

Getting around Woodley
Bus 4 and 6 run from Reading Station to Woodley Precinct every 10-15 minutes, taking 25-30 minutes. From Heathrow, RailAir to Reading Station then bus. There's no rail station in Woodley itself — Earley or Winnersh are the nearest. By car, M4 Junction 10 is 5 minutes south, which is why the M4 hotels concentrate here. Inside Woodley itself, walking works for the precinct area; the aviation museum needs a car or a 25-minute walk.
Questions about Woodley
Not really — it's on the opposite side of the town. Green Park is south-west Reading, Woodley is east. Driving Woodley to Green Park is 15-20 minutes off-peak, up to 40 in rush hour. Not a natural pairing.
Woodley Airfield closed to aviation in 1962 — it's now the housing estate and museum. For actual flying, White Waltham Airfield near Maidenhead does trial lessons from about $180. Book direct with West London Aero Club.
