Sunset over the Thames at Caversham Bridge Sunset over the Thames at Caversham Bridge

On the water

Caversham Bridge, west side, is the classic — the Thames curves away west and the sun drops directly down the river in summer. Get there 30 minutes before sunset. Christchurch Meadows on the Caversham side offers the same view without traffic behind you. Better still, walk 15 minutes east to View Island, where the river splits around a wooded island and you can sit on a bench with no one in sight.

Elevated views

Prospect Park is Reading's highest public park — the terrace outside the mansion (now the Mansion House Cafe) faces west and gives you a full valley sunset over Tilehurst. Take the 17 bus up if you don’t want to walk the hill. Balmore Park in Caversham Heights, less known, is quieter and slightly higher — the view is more residential rooftops than open valley but the light is superb in autumn.

The urban option

The Blade on Greyfriars Road has a bar on an upper floor (Roc & Rye when open) with west-facing windows over Reading's skyline. Not a viewpoint per se, but a drink at golden hour hits well. The rooftop terrace at Malmaison is guests-only officially but rarely enforced if you’re eating at the brasserie. For photographers, the Oracle's upper riverside walkway catches reflected light on the Kennet just before sunset — a small, specific magic worth timing for.
