Where to go: live music and better bars

Sub89 on Friar Street is Reading's best mid-size live music venue — 500 capacity, tickets $15-30, real indie and rock bookings. Purple Turtle on Gun Street is the classic late bar/basement club, open till 3am, drinks $6-9, plays actual music. Milk on Merchants Place is the newer serious cocktail bar, $12-15 cocktails and knowledgeable staff. The Botanist on King's Walk hits the middle ground — food, cocktails, and a plant-heavy interior that's better than it sounds.

The pub circuit

For traditional pubs, do a walk between the Nag's Head (Russell Street), the Retreat (St John's Street), and the Hop Leaf (Southampton Street) — three genuine real-ale pubs, quiz nights during the week, and pints around $6. The Allied Arms on St Mary's Butts has a garden and is where Reading's older creative crowd drink. Zerodegrees on Bridge Street brews on-site — the beer is decent, the wood-fired pizza is better than the average brewpub food.

Where to skip

The Oracle riverside chain bars (Revolution, Slug and Lettuce, All Bar One) are fine but generic — you can find these anywhere. Wetherspoons pubs (Baron Cadogan, Monk's Retreat) are cheap and functional but not a night out in themselves. Avoid the after-2am scene around Friar Street on Saturdays if you’re a nervous drinker — it's the usual UK small-city drunk chaos. Nightclubs come and go on Kings Road; check what's currently open on the night before committing.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Is Reading a good night out?

Yes for live music at Sub89, mid-tier bars, and pub crawls. Not a big-club destination — go to London for that.

What time do pubs close?

Most close 11pm midweek, 12-1am at weekends. Purple Turtle and a few clubs go to 3am.

Where do locals drink?

The Retreat, the Nag's Head, the Hop Leaf, the Allied Arms — the four real-ale pubs make a decent Saturday circuit.

Is Friar Street safe at night?

Yes, well-lit and busy till late. The 2am chuck-out crowd can be rowdy but violence towards visitors is rare.
