Choose your line

GWR fast trains to Paddington run 4 an hour, 25-30 minutes, $25-40 off-peak return. The Elizabeth Line takes 55 minutes but goes right across central London to Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, and Canary Wharf without a change — around $22 off-peak. Rule of thumb: Paddington/Marylebone/West End = GWR; City/Docklands = Elizabeth Line.

A day plan by area

For a first visit, arrive at Paddington and walk to Hyde Park, hop the Tube to Westminster for Parliament and the Abbey ($30), and end at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square (free). For a museum-heavy day, the Elizabeth Line to Tottenham Court Road puts you 5 minutes from the British Museum (free) and the West End theatres. Book West End matinees online for $30-60 seats.

Eating and getting back

Skip Leicester Square. Borough Market near London Bridge for street food ($15), Padella in Shoreditch for pasta ($20), or Dishoom anywhere for Bombay classics ($28) — but always book Dishoom online. Last GWR trains back to Reading run until roughly midnight; Elizabeth Line similar. Contactless bank card or phone works on all TfL — don’t buy a paper Travelcard unless you’re doing 5+ zones.
